Sperm Donor and Process

The sperm donation process involves selecting a donor who meets specific health and genetic criteria to ensure the best chances for a healthy pregnancy. Typically, donors undergo comprehensive screenings, including medical history, genetic testing, and infectious disease testing, to ensure the sperm is safe and viable. Once selected, the sperm is carefully processed and frozen for future use in fertility treatments like intrauterine insemination (IUI) or in-vitro fertilization (IVF).

Donors can remain anonymous, or some programs may offer known donor options. The process is highly regulated to ensure safety, confidentiality, and the well-being of both the donor and the recipient. Sperm donation provides a crucial option for individuals and couples struggling with male infertility or those in need of donor sperm for assisted reproduction.

Eligibility Criteria for Sperm Donation Under India's New ART Law

Under India’s Assisted Reproductive Technology (Regulation) Act, 2021, sperm donors must meet the following eligibility criteria:

Age

Donors should be between
21 and 55 years
old.

Health

Donors must be in good physical and mental health, free from genetic, hereditary, or communicable diseases.

Lifestyle

A healthy lifestyle is essential, with no history of substance abuse or sexually transmitted infections (STIs).

Medical History

Donors must provide comprehensive medical and family histories to ensure the health and well-being of potential offspring.

Sperm Quality

Sperm samples should have a count exceeding 15 million sperm per milliliter, with more than 40% exhibiting motility.

What does the Sperm Donation Process Involve?

The sperm donation process typically involves several key steps to ensure the donor’s sperm is safe, viable, and suitable for fertility treatments:

Donor Selection

Donors are carefully selected based on health, genetic background, and other criteria. They must meet specific age and health requirements.

Screening and Testing

Donors undergo comprehensive medical screenings, including physical exams, genetic testing, infectious disease testing, and psychological evaluations to ensure they are healthy and free of any conditions that could affect the sperm.

Sperm Collection

Once cleared, sperm is collected in a private, sterile environment. This process may involve masturbation or using a sperm collection kit provided by the clinic.

Processing and Freezing

The collected sperm is then processed and analyzed to assess quality (count, motility, and morphology). It is then frozen (cryopreserved) for future use in fertility treatments.

Storage

The sperm is stored in a secure, regulated facility until it is needed for procedures like IUI (intrauterine insemination) or IVF (in-vitro fertilization).

Donation Options

Some donors may remain anonymous, while others may opt for known donation, where their identity is shared with the recipient.

Throughout the process, confidentiality, ethics, and medical safety are prioritized to ensure a secure experience for both the donor and recipient.
